Acacia Senegal, known locally as hashab

Acacia Senegal is a distinct species from Acacia Seyal, and the two are not interchangeable in trade. It is the tree that gave the market the term “gum arabic”: a hard, translucent exudate that forms in tears or nodules on the bark after tapping, then hand-collected and sun-dried by producer households across the Sahelian belt.

In Chad, hashab grows mainly in the Ouaddaï and Chari-Baguirmi regions. Our N’Djamena team buys it directly from named producer groups in those zones, at the start of the harvest season each November.

Why processors specify it: the reference emulsifier

Acacia Senegal forms clear, relatively low-viscosity solutions with strong emulsifying capacity, which is why it remains the standard choice for citrus oil emulsions and beverage clouding agents in soft drinks. The same properties make it the carrier of choice for spray-dried flavour encapsulation, where it forms a protective wall around oil droplets during atomisation.

Beyond beverages and flavours, hard gum is used in confectionery for glazing and texture, and in pharmaceutical and technical formulations where a reliable, well-characterised emulsifier is required. A wholesale buyer specifying acacia gum for these uses is, in practice, specifying Acacia Senegal.

Nodules are hand-sorted on tables in N’Djamena before bagging. Grade 1 covers the cleanest, palest and largest nodules; grade 2 is smaller and shows more natural colour variation, at the same purity criteria. Buyers can order a single grade or an agreed blend, depending on the downstream process.

Sorted lots are packed in 25 kg or 50 kg woven bags, stencilled with the lot number that links the bag back to its zone record and its certificate of analysis.

How is Acacia Senegal different from Seyal?

Acacia Senegal and Acacia Seyal are two different acacia species tapped for gum arabic, and the resulting gums behave differently. Senegal, the hard gum, forms clear, low-viscosity solutions and is the reference emulsifier for beverages and flavour encapsulation. Seyal, the friable gum, is lower in viscosity and higher in soluble fibre, which is why it has become the base material for acacia fibre ingredients. Both are additive E414 and both ship with a certificate of analysis.

What grades do you supply?

Grade 1 and grade 2 hand-sorted nodules, drawn mainly from our Ouaddaï and Chari-Baguirmi collection zones. Grade 1 is cleaner and paler with larger nodules; grade 2 carries more colour variation at the same purity criteria. We can supply a single grade or an agreed blend, packed in 25 kg or 50 kg woven bags.

Can you provide a certificate of analysis?

Yes. Every lot ships with an independent laboratory certificate of analysis covering moisture, total ash, acid-insoluble matter and microbiology, issued before shipment against the lot number. It travels alongside the certificate of origin in the documentary file that accompanies each container.
